February 24 Board Meeting Highlights

The following are highlights from the February 24, 2010 Board Meeting

  • A presentation was made by Sue Taylor-Foley, Coordinator of Assessment and Technology, and Stephen Jamieson, Literacy/Technology Consultant on literacy and technology mentoring in schools. They showed a video featuring SSRSB teaching staff with testimonials about their mentoring experiences and they value they hold.
  • Nova Scotia School Board Association President Ron Marks and Executive Director Ken Meech made a presentation to the Board on three specific topics: early childhood education in public schools, student information systems and the Save Grade 2 campaign.
      • The Save Grade 2 campaign is an NSSBA initiative to demonstrate the loss of programming and the “impossible decisions” that would need to be made if the education budget is cut. www.savegrade2.com
  • The Board massed a motion for a March 8 2010 deadline for school transfers at Riverport & District Elementary. This deadline will not apply to families who experience unforeseen circumstances requiring a transfer at a later date. The March 8 deadline will allow time for staffing allocations to be determined for the end of March.
  • With the passing of Board Member Bezanson, the SSRSB District 9 seat is vacant. A by election will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The by election will be advertised in the Bridgewater Bulletin, the Chester Clipper and CKBW.

    By election schedule:
  1. Declaration of vacancy – February 10th
  2. Set election dates – February 24th
  3. Nomination deadline – March 23rd
  4. Advance polling date – April 6th
  5. Polling date – April 17th

  • A letter has been sent to Education Minister Moore outlining the recommendations from the feasibility study of Dr. J.C. Wickwire Academy. The Board is asking for approval of the 2008 request for a new freestanding middle school in Liverpool. The Board does not support having another feasibility study done on South Queens Junior High.

  • The Board approved the outcome measures for the 2010-2011 Business Plan.
  • The revised Administration of Prescription and Non-prescription Drugs to Students (Policy #560) was approved.
