Lunenburg Academy Space Provided to Class Afloat
Bridgewater, NS – Students from the Class Afloat program will soon be returning to classes after their vessel, the S/V Concordia, sank off the coast of Brazil.

Class Afloat rents office and classroom space from the South Shore Regional School Board at the historic Lunenburg Academy where students spend class time at the beginning of their year before heading out to sea. Their administration is housed at the Lunenburg Academy all year round, with a drastic reduction in space rented once the ship sets sail.

“When we heard about what had happened, our thoughts immediately went to the safety of all on board the ship,” said Nancy Pynch-Worthylake, Superintendent of Schools with SSRSB. “Once we knew how Class Afloat was going to proceed with the school year, we sat down with them to come to an agreement to expand their current rental to allow for class room space.”

Offices and class rooms are on the third floor of Lunenburg Academy with the space totaling 7500sqft. Lunenburg Academy students are located on first and second floors in the building.

“Class Afloat looks forward to its return to Lunenburg,” said Nigel McCarthy, President & CEO of Class Afloat. “Our school at the Academy will be a vibrant part of the community and we look forward to spring together in Nova Scotia.  Many members of the community have stepped forward to help us in the journey to come.  It is wonderful for us that each of our children is safe and sound.  The warm arms of the Lunenburg community will enfold our children; give them a chance to tell their story and to work forward to building a better future.”

“In light of all that has happened, we are happy we could assist the staff and students in obtaining some level of normalcy,” said Superintendent Pynch-Worthylake. Students will be returning to class later in the month.
