South Shore Regional School Board to hold by-election

Bridgewater, NS – The South Shore Regional School Board will be holding a by-election for a representative from District 9 on Saturday, April 17^th 2010

With the passing of Board Member Wanda Bezanson, the seat in District 9 has become vacant. This district covers New Ross Consolidated, Gold River-Western Shore Elementary, and Forest Heights Community School. Some students living in this district also attend Chester Area Middle School. It covers polling districts four, five and six in the Municipality of the District of Chester and polling district four in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.

The 12-member Board consists of 10 members elected to represent specific districts within the South Shore, one African Nova Scotian representative elected by eligible voters throughout the region and one representative of the Acadia First Nation appointed by the Minister of Education to ensure representation of Mi'kmaq people in the region.

Board Members are provided with a small stipend for the considerable time they spend and the commitment they make to govern the public education system in the South Shore region. The responsibilities of the School Board are defined by the province's Education Act. Generally, they include providing education programs to all students in the region; operating and maintaining schools; providing transportation to its students; and employing the Board staff, school administrators, teachers, administrative assistants, librarians, custodians, program support assistants, computer technicians and school bus drivers.

Advance polls will be held on Saturday, April 10^th 2010 and Tuesday, April 13^th 2010 from noon to 8:00 p.m.  Polling locations for the advance polls are:

1. For Municipality of the District of Chester polling district 4 at the Chester Basin Fire Department, 5430 Hwy #3, Chester Basin, NS;
2. For Municipality of the District of Chester polling district 5 at the Western Shore Fire Department, 6412 Hwy #3, Western Shore, NS;
3. For Municipality of the District of Chester polling district 6 at the New Ross Volunteer Fire Department, 4929 Hwy #12, New Ross, NS; and
4. For Municipality of the District of Lunenburg polling district 4 at Blockhouse & District Fire Department Lower Hall, 510 Hwy #325, Blockhouse, NS.

Voting will take place for the Polling Day on Saturday, April 17^th 2010 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the following locations:

1. For Municipality of the District of Chester polling district 4 at the Chester Basin Fire Department, 5430 Hey #3, Chester Basin, NS;
2. For Municipality of the District of Chester polling district 5 at the Gold River Western Shore Elementary School, 6200 Hwy #3, Western Shore, NS;
3. For Municipality of the District of Chester polling district 6 at the New Ross Consolidated School, 4689 Hwy #12, New Ross, NS; and
4. For Municipality of the District of Lunenburg polling district 4 at Blockhouse & District Fire Department Lower Hall, 510 Hwy #325, Blockhouse, NS.
