October 30, 2009: New Lunenburg School Construction to Start July 2010
Construction of a new Primary to Grade 9 school in Lunenburg will get underway next July and is expected to be completed by December 2011, Operations Director Barry Butler advised the South Shore Regional School Board at its regular meeting October 28.
Mr. Butler said that construction of the new school will be managed by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, in consultation of the South Shore Board and the Department of Education. A request for proposals for design services for the new school will be issued within the next few days.
Although the existing school will need to be demolished to make way for the new facility, that won’t happen until next July, he said, so students at Lunenburg Junior High will be able to finish the current school year without moving. During the construction phase, however, Grade 6 students will attend Lunenburg Academy and the other students will attend Centre Consolidated School.
The new school will be built to the gold standard in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Building Rating System. LEED is a third-party certification system which has become an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
