October 15, 2009: Site Selected for New Lunenburg School

Education Minister Marilyn More has advised the South Shore Regional School Board that the site of the existing junior-senior high school in Lunenburg has been selected as the location for a new Primary to Grade 9 school serving the area.

In a letter received by the Board on Wednesday, the minister said that the existing site at 12 Knickle Road was the most appropriate for the new facility. The location was one of three proposed by the Board which were reviewed by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR). TIR recommended the Knickle Road location.

Construction of the new school is expected to get underway in mid-2010 and to be completed in late in 2011. Student populations of Lunenburg Junior-Senior High School, Lunenburg Academy, Riverport & District Elementary  and Centre Consolidated School will be moved to the new $23-million facility.

Consolidation of the four schools in one new facility was a Board decision following the school review process carried out in 2008 and 2009.
