Health Promoting Schools

Health promotion in the South Shore Regional School Board is more than simply encouraging children and young people to eat well and to exercise. It encompasses a much broader holistic approach.

Health promoting schools aim to:

  • Develop and support the physical, mental, emotional and social well-being of all students and staff.
  • Work in partnership with others to identify and meet the health needs of the whole school and the broader community.
  • Educate the whole child through a comprehensive approach to learning.

Currently, health promoting schools are addressing such issues as emotional well-being, physical activity, healthy eating, environmental sustainability and student behaviour.

The Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and Protection, South Shore Health, the Lunenburg and Queens County Community Health Board and the Lunenburg/Queens Recreation Directors and Coorindators Association with in partnership with the Board to support the program.

The Board launched the health promoting schools initiative in 2004, with pilot projects in two elementary schools. It has since expanded to include almost all of its schools.
