Speech-language Pathology Services are available to South Shore students for the assessment and treatment of language disorders and other communication difficulties.

Types of speech-language disorders include:

  • Articulation and phonology - difficulty producing certain sounds.
  • Language - difficulty understanding and using language, including problems following directions and understanding meaning.
  • Fluency - difficulty controling the fluency and rate of speech; stuttering, for example.
  • Phonological awareness - difficulty decding or sounding out words.
  • Hearing - difficulty hearing sounds and using or understanding lanague because of hearing-related challenges.

Speech-language pathologists work with student services, student development coordinators, principals and teachers in developing appropriate programming for students with speech-language difficulties. They also conduct assessments of the speech, language and communication needs of individual students and provide direct or indirect service to students through speech and language therapy, as well as through alternate communication methods.

Students may be referred for speech-lanuage services by schools, parents and outside agencies or may be identified through pre-primary screening. Parental consent is required for assessments and treatment.
