The integrity of this program is maintained in an atmosphere that:

  • Supports inclusion into all aspects of community life.
  • Defines individualization.
  • Promotes self-awareness, self-advocacy and empowerment.
  • Enhances the development of critical-thinking skills, problem-solving skills and personal responsibility.
  • Clarifies the process of assessing community resources.

Our Goal

The goal of the Transition Program is to prepare young adults for employment (sheltered or community), community integration, and post-secondary education (if appropriate).

Our Objectives

Individual students will benefit from having:

  • Active transition teams.
  • An holisitic approach to skills training.
  • Increase employment opportunities.
  • Growth in personal, emotional and social areas.

Student Population

The Transition program is designed for a maximum of 14 students who:

  • Are 18 to 21 years of age.
  • Have Individual Program Plans.
  • Would benefit from skills training in the areas of employment, social skills, independent living skills, and functional academics.  

Criteria for Admission

Each applicant should:

  • Be 18-21 years old .
  • Be enrolled in an SSRSB high school, with an Individual Program Plan.
  • Be recommended by the Program Planning Team.
  • Be continuously enrolled in schools in Lunenburg or Queens County.
  • Complete an application form.
  • Require minimal PSA support.
  • Not pose a flight risk.
  • Have functional communications skills.
  • Utilize the existing SSRSB transportation system to attend the program.

In addition, students should demonstrate appropriate behaviours in the following areas and endeavours:

  • Personal hygiene.
  • Safely access out-of-school activities built into the curriculum.
  • Basic skills for housing readiness, like developing budgets, housekeeping and paying bills.
  • Basic skills for food preparation, like meal planning, grocery shopping and food preparation.
  • Personal fitness, including access to and participation in recreational programs.
  • Job preparation and work placement skills.
  • Inter- and intra-personal social skills.

Our curriculum offers courses in:

  • Job readiness.
  • Work placements.
  • Business English.
  • Budgeting.
  • Business management (Muffin Program).
  • Affective living skills.
  • Personal advocacy.
  • Sexuality awareness.
  • Housing readiness.
  • Food and nutrition.
  • Family studies.
  • Community recreation.
